Acupuncture has been used in Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. In traditional Chinese medicine, pain and illness are said to be the result of blocked or stagnant energy through channels called Meridians. It is along these meridians that the Acupuncture needles are placed.

However, in Western Medicine it has been found that Acupuncture triggers the release of the body's own pain relieving hormones- endorphins- and also causes an anti-inflammatory response in the brain. It is on this Western model that Physiotherapists use Acupuncture, which is considered 'complementary' to the Physiotherapist's practice.

Physiotherapists use Acupuncture to relieve pain, decrease tension and spasm in muscles, and to help restore function.
